Travel & Transportation

Unless it is absolutely necessary, please do not bring your car to Nantucket. The island is only 14.5 x 3.5 miles in size with most lodging, shops, and restaurants within a mile from the center of town. Our streets are narrow and diving and parking are difficult, particularly in the summer. There is ample parking in Hyannis around the boat docks and at the airport. Bicycle, car and moped rentals, as well as taxis, buses and tours ( van tours, bus tours, & bike tours)are available on the island. The Nantucket Regional Transit Authority (NRTA) offers seasonal bus service called the WAVE, from late May to early October with expanded routes in the summer months. Call 508-228—7025 for more WAVE information. There are taxi stands at all points of entry to the island, and at the Pacific Club Building on Lower Main Street. Taxi rates are based on mileage and are higher after 1 am, with extra charges for additional passengers and baggage. Ferry companies transport your bicycle at an additional charge. There are over 35 miles of bicycle paths on Nantucket.
